Pokhara, Nepal sees largest outbreak of Dengue Fever

On Tuesday, twenty-two new cases of dengue fever were reported in Pokhara, Nepal. Out of the 22 patients infected by the disease, four are undergoing treatment in Charak Memorial, six are in Gandaki Medical College, and 12 are in Fewa City Hospital.

Last Sunday in Pokhara, there were seven reported cases of dengue fever, on Monday a further 12 were reported.  Patients tend to suffer from symptoms which include severe headaches, mild to incapacitating high fever, rashes on the skin, and pain in muscles and joints.

The majority of residents were infected by the mosquito-borne illness. Some individuals  from the neighbouring distrcirs of Parbat, Baglung, Syangja, and Tanahun districts also became ill.  

Hemanta Sharma, chief of the Pokhara Metroplis Health Division commented:

 “This is the first time that such a large number of dengue patients have been reported in Pokhara.”

The Health Division of Pokhara Metropolis and the DPHO has worked to promote their awareness campaigns in numerous wards of the metropolis to control the disease. In the near future, the municipal authority intends to destroy mosquito larvae in the infected areas. Health workers advised local residents to visit health facilities and to adopt utmost caution.
