New project to assist unaccompanied migrants across Spain

Within the last few years, numerous countries worldwide have encountered an influx of young, unaccompanied migrants who fled their home countries in search of a better way of life, safety and employment opportunities. In the first seven months of 2018, arrivals increased 130% compared to the same period last year.

From January-August 2018, 15% of the migrants who arrived in Spain were children.

As a result, The Pinardi Federation of Salesian Social Platforms has worked to launch a new programme to help young minors.

The Carmelite nuns of Parla donated an apartment to house five migrant children. The programme was created to meet the needs of poor children and adolescents in response to a recent appeal by the Community of Madrid through the Family and Minors General Management.

In a statement about the programme, The Pinardi Federation commented:

“We are aware that everything has gone very fast and what normally takes months has been a matter of days. There are many urgencies of all kinds for these children to be assisted by the conditions they deserve, in the most dignified way and by safeguarding their rights as minors.”

The Salesian missionaries and their programmes assist European countries with the perpetual refugee crisis. The programme aims to provide educational and humanitarian assistance to refugees so they can become fully integrated into their host countries.
